Pumps should <a title=\"Proper Centrifugal Pump Operation Practices \u2013 McNally Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcnallyinstitute.com\/06-html\/6-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not be operated running dry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When a pump is run dry, there are two common results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>1) The Impeller will Melt Along the Shaft, Causing the Impeller to Seize onto the Shaft<\/h2>\n<p>If the impeller seizes, it will stop and not rotate. To correct this, the pump should be taken apart and a drill bit should be used to clean out the bore of the impeller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2527 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of a pump\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>2) The Rear Housing may Melt<\/h2>\n<p>A hole may develop in the <a title=\"New Stainless Steel Front Housing For Magnetic Pumps \u2013 March Pumps\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/blog\/new-stainless-steel-housing\/\" rel=\"\">rear housing<\/a>, allowing liquid to escape. Or, the boss of the rear housing, which secures the pump shaft, may become deformed, which will allow the shaft to move instead of remaining stationary.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2526 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller_rear_housing.jpg\" alt=\"Rear housing image\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller_rear_housing.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/impeller_rear_housing-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>This will cause damage to the impeller and may cause the shaft to break from the impeller bouncing on it.\u00a0If the pump is made from stainless steel, it is unlikely holes will develop in the rear housing or that the boss will deform. What is likely to happen is the impeller bushing will seize onto the shaft.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of time it takes for a pump to suffer damage from running dry depends on many variables.<\/p>\n<h3>Pump Size<\/h3>\n<p>Generally, the larger the pump with larger and heavier impellers, the faster it will be to suffer damage. The more clearance between the bore of the impeller and the shaft, the more time you will have before suffering damage. <a href=\"\/resources\/pump-plastic-metal\/polypropylene-pumps\/\">Polypropylene<\/a> will suffer damage quicker than <a href=\"\/resources\/pump-plastic-metal\/kynar-pumps\/\">Kynar<\/a> on the same model, and stainless steel will take more time than plastic.<\/p>\n<h3>Liquid Used in the Pump<\/h3>\n<p>Another factor is the liquid previously in the pump. If the liquid is <a title=\"Magnetic and Centrifugal Pumps Search Index \u2013 March Pumps\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marchpump.com\/pumps\/\" rel=\"\">ambient or cooler<\/a>, it will take more time for the pump to suffer damage after it starts to run dry than if the liquid is warmer.<\/p>\n<h3>Safe Options for Dry Pumping<\/h3>\n<p>If you are using the pump for <a href=\"\/applications\/chemical-transfer\/\">tank transfer<\/a> and want to empty the tank, this may mean running the pump dry for a few seconds. If the pump is run dry for less than 45-60 seconds, the pump should not suffer damage.\u00a0Anytime you are aware that the pump may have to be run dry to empty the tank, the operator must take care to ensure the pump is run dry for the absolute minimum amount of time. Any pump that suffers from running dry is not covered by warranty.<\/p>\n<p>Dry running can be an expensive hazard on your equipment but with care and supervision, you can elongate the life of your machinery.
